Dog Days of Summer Event

It’s August (can you believe it?) and almost Friday, so that means its time for our monthly First Friday activity in downtown South Bend. The plans for August 3rd include the family dog (on a leash, of course) in Dog Days of Summer. Family-friendly plans include everything from a scavenger game to a rescue dog showcase. There is even a dog trainer from Chicago as well as an ugliest dog contest (now that will be fun to watch). For those more interested in art, consider checking out the Artpost reception (5-7pm) or the panel discussion (7-9pm). Or perhaps the Tejano dance band is more your style, then head to the KeyBank Plaza (5:30-8:30pm). And who wouldn’t enjoy the Classic Car Cruise In on Michigan Street? Don’t forget to grab dinner at one of the great dining establishments downtown. For more information about this event, check out DTSB’s website: http://www.dtsbfirstfridays.com/events.htm

Put Your Thinking Caps On

Ever want to experience Enshrinement? Well now is the time, since the College Football Hall of Fame will soon load up its truck and move to Beverly… (um, Atlanta). As usual, our town is filled with new celebrity faces and downtown is all abuzz. It’s pretty exciting. Check out CFHOF’s website to find an activity that interests you (see ribs cook-off in previous post – yum!!): http://www.enshrinementfestival.org/

While there has been controversy surrounding the CFHOF, I think most would agree that it has been a fun stop for families on various occasions (from Enshrinement to Football Fridays to special events and more). Personally, I hope there is a way for some of those activities to stick around.

If money were not an issue, how would you like to see the CFHOF building used? Here’s a couple of my ideas:
1. Full-service shopping mecca with specialty boutiques, bridal boutique, restaurant, and grocery store (a need for those that live downtown).
2. Community center with theatre, rooms for programs/classes, meeting space (Okay, I know this is a real stretch, but it could be fun).

What are your ideas? Share them here!

Downtown Block Party

Did someone say Ribs Cook-Off? Yes, the Kansas City BBQ Society sanctioned event is back again this year. Of course, that means it must be Enshrinement Weekend, which is bittersweet for us locals, as the College Football Hall of Fame will not be here much longer. So take advantage of the festivities on the Hall of Fame’s Gridiron Plaza. There will be live music, family-friendly activities (inflatables and face-painting), plus interactive activities.  The fun begins at 11am. Word of warning, don’t wait too long to get ribs… some places run out fast (yes, they are just that good). Take your family and friends for a fun day, afternoon, evening. Fireworks display at the end. Nice!
