Let’s Rock the House

Have you heard? The College Football Hall of Fame closes its doors this Sunday (12/30/12). As you know, they are moving out of South Bend. What you might not know is that all tickets and sales this weekend (Saturday and Sunday) will benefit South Bend athletics. And, to sweeten the pot, admission is only $2 per person and all items in the gift shop are buy one get one free. Yes, it’s true. What a great way to end their stay in our fine city. Quick, grab your family and friends. Let’s rock the house that Rockne would have helped to build if only he could have… and let’s send CFHOF off on a high note.

Have ideas on uses for the CFHOF building once it is vacant? Share your ideas here and be sure to join Three Degrees of Separation MeetUp as we discuss that at an upcoming gathering.

Put Your Thinking Caps On

Ever want to experience Enshrinement? Well now is the time, since the College Football Hall of Fame will soon load up its truck and move to Beverly… (um, Atlanta). As usual, our town is filled with new celebrity faces and downtown is all abuzz. It’s pretty exciting. Check out CFHOF’s website to find an activity that interests you (see ribs cook-off in previous post – yum!!):

While there has been controversy surrounding the CFHOF, I think most would agree that it has been a fun stop for families on various occasions (from Enshrinement to Football Fridays to special events and more). Personally, I hope there is a way for some of those activities to stick around.

If money were not an issue, how would you like to see the CFHOF building used? Here’s a couple of my ideas:
1. Full-service shopping mecca with specialty boutiques, bridal boutique, restaurant, and grocery store (a need for those that live downtown).
2. Community center with theatre, rooms for programs/classes, meeting space (Okay, I know this is a real stretch, but it could be fun).

What are your ideas? Share them here!

Downtown Block Party

Did someone say Ribs Cook-Off? Yes, the Kansas City BBQ Society sanctioned event is back again this year. Of course, that means it must be Enshrinement Weekend, which is bittersweet for us locals, as the College Football Hall of Fame will not be here much longer. So take advantage of the festivities on the Hall of Fame’s Gridiron Plaza. There will be live music, family-friendly activities (inflatables and face-painting), plus interactive activities.  The fun begins at 11am. Word of warning, don’t wait too long to get ribs… some places run out fast (yes, they are just that good). Take your family and friends for a fun day, afternoon, evening. Fireworks display at the end. Nice!

Stay-cation Ideas

Everyone’s still talking about stay-cations, and for good reason… there is plenty to do in and around South Bend. Why not take advantage of some of those things? Now whether you’re planning to pitch a tent and roast hot dogs and s’mores in the back yard, or scheming the best movies for a two-day film fest, or bringing the coast to your door with a crab boil, there is something to be said for a stay-cation. Whatever your plans, consider including some of South Bend’s gems to the list of activities (and add your ideas to this list, please). Here’s some of our favorites:

  • Catch a Silver Hawks game at The Cove
  • Tour the Oliver Mansion
  • Check out the classic Studebaker collection
  • Enjoy the chocolate smells during a tour at South Bend Chocolate Factory (on Sample)
  • Trek around the College Football Hall of Fame (Enshrinement is just around the corner)
  • Journey through Potawatomi Zoo
  • Stretch your legs at HealthWorks! Kids Museum
  • And, of course, a little ways from South Bend… a dip into Lake Michigan is always splashy

For more ideas, check out the State of Indiana’s website (where you can pick activity type and location):

Be sure to post additional ideas here to share!
