The Time is Now

Yes, it’s true. It’s time for you to add your input to assist our fine city with your great ideas regarding vacant and abandoned properties. The city realizes that this is a huge issue (thus the task force) and it also realizes that it can accomplish more with the insights and ideas of smart people like yourself. So won’t you take some time to share your brilliance with these public servants tonight? Think how much better the city could be with your guidance! The City of South Bend’s Vacant & Abandoned Property Task Force public meeting is tonight (Aug 28) at Riley High School from 5:30 to 7:3pm. Would love to hear new voices in the discussion! Share some of your ideas here as well as at the meeting tonight, would ya?

My Heart Beats for Art Beat

Too corny? Okay, I get that. But you really should check out Art Beat tomorrow (Sat, Aug 25). It’s a great opportunity to support local talent – from visual to performing and culinary artists. Michigan Street will be filled with paintings, photography, sculptures, jewelry, food, music and so much more. My friend Carl said that there will be an interactive wall mural. Cool, right? Did I mention food and photography? Grab some friends and plan to spend a couple of hours checking out the music, food and wares. The event runs from 11am to 6pm. Parking downtown is free all weekend – did you know that? So what’s your excuse now? Hope to see you in the heart of downtown tomorrow!

You Must Act Fast

Do you want to make an impact on your neighborhood? Then consider applying for a coveted spot in the Neighborhood Leadership Academy. The class meets on Tuesday evenings beginning on Sept. 25th. Applications are due August 10th (so like now). But don’t let that discourage you – the app is quick. And what you will gain from the 8-week class will equip you with the tools you need to make changes in your neighborhood and it will connect you to other community leaders that will support your efforts. Seriously, stop procrastinating and send in the application. You’ll be glad you did. Check NRC’s website for the app:

What is NRC? Well, NRC “programs help to connect communities, grow grassroots leaders and support neighborhood projects that reflect our pride in South Bend.” If you have any interest in the improvement of your neighborhood, then you really need to get connected to NRC.

For more about NRC’s unique Tango & Tapas fundraising event, check out my previous post. It promises to be a fun evening – invite your friends!

Beach Party On the River

From Friday’s Teen Night to Saturday’s Family Day to the 21+ Beach Party on Saturday evening, there is fun for everyone on the beach. But not just any beach. This event is held on the St. Joseph River where organizers have once again brought in tons of sand to create a pristine beach for all of us to groove on. What a fabulous idea and we get to benefit from it! The organizers have added another event this year — the In the River boat float. Whether you want to dump your teen for an evening or would like some family friendly activities or simply want to hang with the adults, you should consider this event. Did I mention food, battle of the bands, cornhole and volleyball tourney? There’s so much to do! Check out On the River’s website where you can get specific information on all the wonderful activities occurring over the weekend near downtown South Bend:
